Creating a healthier and safer world for children through the power of sport and playfeatured title

Mike Emery - Deputy National Director

Experience

I first became interested in sport for development when I was 18. I worked at an outdoor education centre for disabled and disadvantaged children during my university vacations and, after I graduated, founded a charity that uses sport and play to develop socially, mentally and physically disadvantaged children from Eastern Europe. I believe sport and play can be tremendously effective in the development of children and communities, and in fostering international understanding and tolerance.

I recently completed a Masters degree in International Communications and Development, and am proud to be working for Right To Play as Strategic Partnerships Manager.

Get to know me

What's your nickname and why?
Mikey. I was once introduced to my new school mates as 'Mikey', and the name stuck.

Where do you go for inspiration?
My family.

First music album you ever purchased?
Thank goodness you didn't ask first 'single', that would have been embarrassing. First album? Oasis - Definitely Maybe.

Favourite film and why?
Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Del Griffith (John Candy's character) is possibly the nicest character ever created.

Favourite sport?
Football.

Best personal sporting moment?
Sat in the clubhouse of a Semi-Professional Football Club in South Wales, an elderly fan came up to me and congratulated me on scoring on my debut by tucking a humbug sweet into the palm of my hand.

If you had an open plane ticket, where would you go?
To see friends in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island.

If you could only pack three items, what would you take?
Ipod - a holiday isn't a holiday without music to remember it by
Sandals - to live in for the duration of the holiday.
Passport - it would be silly not to.
