Frank Lampard was born into a football family on 20th June 1978 in Romford, London. His father, Frank Lampard Senior also played for England and was coach at West Ham. His uncle is the renowned manager, Harry Redknapp and his cousin is footballer Jamie Redknapp. Yet Frank didn't need his family to make his own mark in Premier League football. Chelsea paid £11 million in 2001 to move Frank from West Ham after the departure of his father from the club. After a quiet start, he has flourished at the club and as a midfielder, he has driven the game for the team. He has also proved indispensable in helping Chelsea's own drive to dominate England's Premier League by rarely missing a match. In fact, Lampard holds the Premier League Record for the number of consecutive games played. |
In his time at Chelsea, Frank has won the English Premiership twice, the League Cup and the FA Community Shield. In the 2006 season, he scored a remarkable 16 goals for the club and manager, Jose Mourinho declared him 'the best player in the world'. He is Chelsea's current top scorer and the highest scoring midfielder in the club's history.
Lampard was part of the national team in Euro 2004 and had an exceptional championship. He was subsequently voted Player of the Year and in 2005 he became the Sportswriters' Footballer of the Year and runner-up in the European and World Player of the Year. As midfielder of England's World Cup Squad, he endured a less exceptional tournament, a subject that was of much debate in the national newspapers. Frank is Vice-Captain of Chelsea's squad. He supports the national charity' Teenage Cancer Trust' in a personal capacity as well as adopting his new role as a Chelsea Ambassador for Right To Play. |
