Right To Play Coach Profile

Tahmina Khan Pak

Coach: Tahmina Khan

Location: Quetta City, Pakistan

Tahmina's Story: Tahmina was born in Kabul, Afghanistan. When her father lost his job in Afghanistan during the war, making it more impossible day by day to stay, Tahmina's family migrated to Pakistan in 1990. Tahmina is now 17 years old and has three sisters and two brothers. In addition to her role as a teacher, Tahmina has been working with Right To Play as a Coach since 2004.

Community impact: Tahmina works with Afghan refugee children in Quetta City, Pakistan. Her focus has been on creating new opportunities for girls in the community and changing old attitudes toward women through sport and play. Tahmina has had a tremendously positive impact on her entire community. Through her role as a Coach she has succeeded in building stronger, more confident girls and has made great strides in helping the community open up to new possibilities and new attitudes towards girls and women.

Tahmina works with approximately 280 kids, six days a week.

Tahmina Khan Tahmina in her own words:
"In the past girls didn't have any rights. People believed that girls were less than boys, but they are not different and they have hearts to spend their lives freely. Girls too have the right to play so that they can develop themselves and their families. A male develops only himself but a woman develops the whole society and her whole family.

After taking part in Right To Play, the girls have confidence and now they are talking with boys and giving answers to their questions. Now the girls are active and smart and know their rights and their roles in the society. Families of the girls also now understand that boys and girls have the equal and same rights. Parents are also happy as their children also get information through the Right To Play program about health, respectful attitudes towards parents, passion to rebuild their country and peace.

Right To Play has also really helped me. Before this program I only used to teach books to the children. I never talked with them closely and friendly. I also couldn't come out from my home alone. Maybe this is because I didn't have self-confidence. But soon after joining Right To Play, I started playing with my students. Now I go out of home on my own, without the assistance of my brother or father. And also I like to communicate with my community and try to solve their issues. I see that my colleagues, community elders, friends and my students now respect me more. I believe that I got self-confidence and encouragement from within my own self through sports."

Right To Play Says:
"Tahmina has the talent and confidence that a Coach should have. Most importantly her communication with children is very effective. This fact is evident from the response of children. Children feel very happy and enjoy with her while playing and she takes care of the children. She is very honest with her work and she likes sports." Ms. Muzhgan Jalal, Quetta Coordinator
